Membrane Bioreactor (MBR)

MBR System

A MBR System is an Advanced Wastewater Treatment Technology that Combines Biological Treatment with Membrane Filtration. It is designed to Provide High-Quality Effluent and is Used in Both Municipal and Industrial Wastewater Treatment Applications. The System Works by Integrating Activated Sludge treatment with Membrane Filtration (ultrafiltration (UF) to Filter out Suspended Solids and Pathogens, resulting in Clean, treated Water.

MBR Systems Based On Capacity:

1. Small Municipal MBR:

        • Capacity: 100 to 500 M3/day.
        • Application: Small Town Or Rural Area Wastewater Treatment

2. Mid-Sized Industrial MBR:

        • Capacity: 1,000 to 5,000 M3/day
        • Application: Wastewater Treatment in Industries like Textile Mills, Food Processing Plants, Pharmaceuticals

3. Large City MBR Plant:

        • Capacity: 50,000 to 150,000 M3/day
        • Application: Large Urban Areas Treating Municipal Wastewater

4. Mega MBR System:

        • Capacity: 500,000 M3/day or More
        • Application: Large metropolitan areas Or Industrial Complexes

How MBR Works:

1. Wastewater Inlet: Raw Wastewater is Introduced into the Bioreactor, where it is Mixed With Activated Sludge for Biological Treatment.

2. Biological Degradation: The Microorganisms Consume Organic Pollutants in the Wastewater, Breaking them Down into Simpler Compounds, Such as Carbon Dioxide and Water. This Process is aerated to maintain Optimal Oxygen Levels for Microbial Activity.

3. Filtration: After the Biological Treatment, the Mixture of treated Water and Activated carbon Sludge is passed through Membranes. These Membranes Separate the Treated Water From the Solids. The Permeate that passes through the Membrane is the High-Quality Treated Water, while the Remaining Solids are retained.

4. Sludge Recirculation: The retained Sludge is Often Recirculated Back into the Bioreactor, Promoting Further Biological Degradation of Pollutants. Some Sludge May be Remmoved Periodically for Disposal Or further Treatment.

5. Effluent Quality: The Treated Water (Effluent) Produced by the MBR System is typically of Very High Quality, Meeting Or Exceeding Secondary Or Tertiary Treatment Standards. This Can Make MBR Suitable for Reuse Applications, Such as Industrial Processes Or Even Potable Water (After further Treatment).

Applications Of MBR System:

Wastewater Treatment: MBRs are used across industries like food & beverage, chemical, pharmaceuticals and textiles to treat industrial effluent, removing suspended solids, organic matter and microorganisms.

  • Municipal Wastewater: MBR systems are used in sewage treatment plants to provide high-quality effluent suitable for discharge or reuse
  • Food & Beverage: MBR systems treat wastewater from food processing.
  • Pharmaceuticals: Used for treating pharmaceutical wastewater, MBR systems remove residual chemicals, antibiotics and other contaminants
  • Textile Industry: MBRs treat wastewater from dyeing, finishing and washing processes, removing harmful chemicals
  • Pulp & Paper: MBR systems help treat wastewater from paper mills, removing fibers, lignin and organic pollutants
  • Chemical Manufacturing: Used to treat effluent from chemical plants
  • Oil & Gas: MBR Systems treat produced water and refinery wastewater, helping to meet environmental discharge regulations and providing treated water for reuse in operations.
  • Power Plants: MBR systems treat cooling water blow down and other process wastewater, enabling water reuse and reducing environmental impact
